Finally!

You know, I was so disillusioned with the political process that I didn't really believe in change until after Obama was elected. When I found out I wept, overwhelmed with happiness but also with a grief I hadn't really acknowledged. The last 8 years what has happened to our country and what our country has done has been so awful, and my cynical acceptance of the status quo really hid, even from myself, how devistating it's all been. loss after loss, shame and guilt, and more and more I'd distance myself from my country, and now i feel like I can come home, knowing I'll be welcomed but also knowing that, no mater what, I don't want to ever harden my heart to my country again.

i made cilantro walnut pesto in like one second with the processor! it was so delicious. it even made whole wheat pasta taste good, and whole wheat pasta usually tastes like a combo of pencil shavings and cardboard.

also made whole wheat chipatis, green beans in onion paste (from the Jaffery), and cucumber mint raita.

and after watching that alton brown about how you need to keep spices away from light, i wrapped all my spice jars in brown paper and wrote little labels on them and drew drawings of the spices in them. what a nerd!

a delicious nerd...

a taste of the married life

okay, we bought a cuisinart! i am so jazzed.

i know we could have registered for a new one, but they are 2 to 3 times the cost of finding one on ebay, and i'd much rather get something used but sturdy (all my pals have DLC-8's and DLC-10's and they have lasted forever -- sturdy little workhorses, they is). really i'd much rather get money as a wedding present, seeing as both my sweetie and i are taking out loans for grad school and we're paying for our own wedding.

we got a used DLC-8 on ebay, and it includes the pusher, metal blade, dough blade, and several disc blades (and I also found the pasta making attachment for $40.00 and got that as well). we cook up to six dinners a week, and since i often work from home, i also cook breakfast and lunch, and it seems every week i find a great looking recepie only to see "place in food processor" and of course since we didn't have one, end up spending the next 1/2 hour mincing everything. also, once my sweetie tried to hand make aioli -- as in whisking it. he tried for a good 10 minutes of non-stop whisking -- now that is love.

so, of the 2 of you that read this site -- do any of you have food processors? what should i make with it? i know chapatis will become much more frequent accompaniments to indian food, pie crusts will make themselves, and i will be freezing so much pesto, but what else? what does your food processor do for you?

Swiping this from Eleanor's Trousers. My 1001st day, May 5, 2011, ends up being around when I'd defend my Masters thesis and take my comps. It's both a long and a short amount of time. It seems like forever away, and yet crazy to think that by that time I should be 3/4 done with my school part of my doctorate (just a few courses and my dissertation for my 4th year, and pre-doctoral internship the 5th, barring any re-adjustment of schedule due to baby shenanegians).

I'm totally nervous about starting school, and afraid that it is going to take over my life. Scratch that, I'm afraid I'm going to let it take over my life. Hopefully periodically checking back at the list will remind me that I have other interests besides grad school and IRB's.
